About Dr. Kern
Dr. Marc Kern is a nationally-recognized expert in the field of addiction therapy. He has made over 100 appearances on syndicated and local radio and TV shows, including ABC’s 20/20, Larry King Live, CNN and programs on The Learning Channel and CBS. He has also been featured in articles in dozens of daily newspapers and national magazines.
Dr. Kern’s knowledge of what his patients face is based on-first-hand experience. Before becoming a therapist, he had been a successful architect with a thriving practice. He lost a marriage and his career to problem drinking and a drug habit. He understands the frustration, the feeling of hopelessness, and the enormous stress of trying to hold one’s life together under trying circumstances. His personal story is reflected in his desire to help others find their way back to living a balanced life.
His professional accomplishments include co-authoring Responsible Drinking – a Moderation Management approach for problem drinkers and publishing his practical self-help book Take Control, Now!, a do-it-yourself blueprint for managing damaging habits. It features the breakthrough ideas and techniques that distinguish his provocative “harm reduction” non-12-step approach to alcohol and drug treatment from most of the other addiction treatment approaches currently used.
Founder of Addiction Alternatives™ and Life Management Skills, Inc., Dr. Kern has over 30 years of experience as a clinical psychologist and addictions specialist in his private practice in Los Angeles and Orange County.
Dr. Kern is a Certified Addiction Specialist, a Certified Rational Addictions Therapist and has earned certification in the Treatment of Alcohol and Other Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders, as recognized by the American Psychological Association. His work has been published in many professional publications, including the prestigious International Journal of the Addictions.
Currently, he continues a lifelong study and practice of the newest research-based treatments that will best help his clients with addictions and other destructive, repetitive behaviors to lead normal lives.
